Carbon Trust Advances Floating Wind Dynamic Cable Development
The Carbon Trust has selected five winners for its dynamic export cable competition under the Floating Wind Joint Industry Project (JIP). This initiative supports the development of dynamic cables for floating wind farms and accelerates offshore renewable innovation.
Dynamic Export Cable Competition Winners
The selected companies include:

These companies will design, test, and develop dynamic export cables ranging from 130 kV to 250 kV. These cables will enable efficient power transmission from floating wind turbines to shore.
Supporting Floating Wind Commercialization
The Floating Wind JIP aims to overcome key technical barriers in offshore wind. In particular, the lack of dynamic export cables has slowed the commercial deployment of floating wind farms.
As a result, this project focuses on accelerating innovation and ensuring the technology meets industry demands. The first phase of the project will conclude in March 2020, and its findings will guide future development stages.
Industry Collaboration and Future Impact
The Carbon Trust works closely with industry partners, including BPP Cables, to ensure that dynamic cable technology becomes commercially viable within the next five to ten years.
According to the Carbon Trust, this collaboration will help developers adopt reliable cable solutions for large-scale floating wind projects.

Addressing Offshore Cable Challenges
The Carbon Trust continues to support innovation through its Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA) program. This initiative focuses on solving critical challenges in offshore wind infrastructure.
For example, the organization has funded projects to develop subsea cable monitoring systems. These systems help detect damage during installation and reduce costly failures.
Industry data shows that 68% of offshore wind insurance losses between 2002 and 2015 resulted from cable faults, often during construction. Therefore, improving cable reliability remains a top priority.
