LS C&S Cable wins submarine cable contract in Gulf Coast worth $86 million

LS C&S Bahrain submarine cable project

LS Cable & System (LS C&S) has secured an approximately $85 million turnkey contract for the LS C&S Bahrain submarine cable project. The company will connect Bahrain’s main islands to nearby tourist islands with a reliable subsea power link.

Bahrain’s Electricity & Water Authority (EWA) plans to install about 25 km of submarine power cable from Bahrain’s main islands to the Hawar Islands, a popular diving and tourism destination.

Instead of building a new power plant on a smaller island, the government will extend grid power from the main island. This approach supports its tourism complex development plans and reduces infrastructure costs.

Project partners and schedule

Saudi-based ALGIHAZ Contracting Co. serves as the primary contractor. Meanwhile, LS C&S will manage the submarine cable scope, including supply and installation.

The partners plan to complete the project by September 2021. In addition, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has backed the initiative. LS C&S won the contract despite strong competition from leading European and Japanese cable manufacturers.

LS C&S Bahrain submarine cable project built on global experience

LS C&S credits its track record on long-distance submarine power cable projects as a key advantage. For example, the company has delivered:

  • The Jeju–Jindo Island grid link (113 km) in South Korea

  • Qatar submarine cable project (100 km)

  • Projects in Canada (35 km) and the U.S. (30 km)

This global experience helped LS C&S secure the LS C&S Bahrain submarine cable project and build trust with regional stakeholders.

Strategy, security, and future investment

LS C&S President and CEO Roe-hyun Myung noted that power grid projects connect closely to national security and social stability. Therefore, he stressed that economic factors alone do not decide suppliers, especially where blackouts can trigger unrest.

As a result, LS C&S continues to leverage its product quality and construction capabilities to expand overseas. At the same time, it increases domestic investment to support long-term growth.

The company also reports that it dominated the Taiwanese submarine cable market, valued at roughly $420 million in 2019. To fuel further growth, LS C&S has invested about $42 million in its Donghae, Gangwon-do facilities and plans to complete a second plant there soon.
