Nexans reports order for fire-retardant cables for Serbiaโ€™s largest power plant

Nexans power cable contract for Nikola Tesla A

Nexans has signed aย โ‚ฌ2.1 million contract with Coptechย to deliverย 206 km of fireโ€‘retardant power cablesย for a newย flue gas desulfurization (FGD) unitย at Serbiaโ€™sย 1,560 MW Nikola Tesla A coalโ€‘fired power plant. You can learn more about the company atย https://www.nexans.comย and about Coptech atย https://www.coptech.rs.

This FGD project supports theย Serbian governmentโ€™s โ‚ฌ14 billion investment planย to boost the national economy and modernize theย power generation sector. As part of that plan, the Nikola Tesla A upgrade aims to improve bothย reliabilityย andย environmental performanceย at one of the countryโ€™s most important power plants.

Fireโ€‘retardant cable scope and manufacturing

Nexans will supplyย fireโ€‘retardant power cablesย that meetย IEC 60332โ€‘3โ€‘24 CAT Cย requirements, helping enhance safety and reduce fire risk in the new FGD unit. Theย lowโ€‘voltage (LV) cablesย will useย crossโ€‘linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, while Nexans will also provide matchingย mediumโ€‘voltage (MV) and LV cable familiesย to support the full installation.

The company will manufacture both the MV and LV cables at itsย Denizli plant in Turkey, which serves as a key production hub for regional projects. Nexans plans an initial delivery phase inย 2020, followed by final deliveries inย 2021, in line with the schedule for bringing the flue gas desulfurization unit online.

Environmental benefits and regional impact

Theย Nikola Tesla A plantย forms part of the widerย Termoelektrane Nikola Tesla (TENT) complexย inย Obrenovac, nearย Belgrade, Serbiaโ€™s capital. By adding the FGD unit, the plant aims toย significantly reduce sulfur dioxide and particulate emissions, supporting Serbiaโ€™s efforts to meetย strict EU environmental standardsย while still securing stable power generation.

Executives from both companies highlighted the strategic value of this work.ย Nexans Turkeyย has coordinated closely with local partners to deliver highโ€‘quality cable solutions despite a challenging market environment. Nexansโ€™ regional leadership emphasized that this project allows the company toย contribute directly to Serbiaโ€™s power sector modernization, while Coptechโ€™s management noted Nexansโ€™ย proven expertise in power generation projectsย as a key factor in the partnership.
