NKT commissions power cable system for U.K.โ€™s Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm

NKT Hornsea 2 Offshore Wind Project Connects Clean Power to the U.K.

NKTย has finished theย power cable connection systemย for theย Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm, linking it to the U.K. mainland. Theย NKT Hornsea 2 offshore wind projectย will soon become theย worldโ€™s largest operational wind farm, advancing the countryโ€™s transition to renewable energy.

When fully online later this year, Hornsea 2 will generateย 1.3 GWย of electricity โ€” enough to supplyย 1.3 million U.K. homesย with clean power.

Expanding the Worldโ€™s Largest Offshore Energy Site

The Hornsea 2 farm standsย 89 km off Englandโ€™s east coastย and includesย 165 turbines, each designed to produceย 8 MW. The project requiredย 196 km of 220 kV high-voltage AC submarine cable, whichย NKTย produced at itsย Karlskrona, Swedenย facility.

That plant operates entirely onย green electricity, cutting the projectโ€™s carbon footprint and supporting sustainable manufacturing practices.

This project will surpassย Hornsea 1, making the combined Hornsea complex a cornerstone of the U.K.โ€™s renewable energy network.

Delivering Cable Systems with Sustainable Technology

To connect Hornsea 2,ย NKTย used its advanced installation vessel, theย NKT Victoria, renowned for its precision and environmental efficiency. The ship completed cable installation on schedule, helping ensure high safety and minimal environmental disruption.

NKT continues testing, commissioning, and energizing operations to bring the full system online efficiently and reliably.

Driving the U.K.โ€™s Green Energy Transformation

Theย NKT Hornsea 2 offshore wind projectย builds on the companyโ€™s strong track record in offshore energy connections. NKT has already delivered successful links forย Hornsea 1,ย Moray East, and theย Walney Extension.

Currently, the company is working on theย Dogger Bank wind farm, which will feature theย first HVDC connectionย between a U.K. offshore site and the mainland โ€” an important step forward for renewable grid development.

NKTโ€™s Global Commitment to Renewable Power

Through projects likeย Hornsea 2, NKT continues leading innovation in offshore power infrastructure. The company designs cable systems that balanceย efficiency,ย cost-effectiveness, andย environmental responsibility.
