NKT completes repair of a disabled power grid interconnector for Sweden to Denmark

NKT Kontiskan 2 Repair Project Restores Nordic Power Connection

NKTย successfully completed theย NKT Kontiskan 2 repair project, restoring the 285 kV HVDC interconnector betweenย Swedenย andย Denmark. The effort reestablished reliable power flow across the Nordic grid and improved cross-border energy stability.

Thanks to careful planning and quick response, NKT repaired the link in record time while strengthening long-term energy reliability.

Fast Response and Lasting Results

Theย Kontiskan 2 interconnector, operated byย Svenska Kraftnรคtย andย Energinet, was damaged by external impact inย January 2022. NKT responded immediately and completed the full restoration withinย eight weeks.

Even more impressive, the offshore repair work lasted onlyย 12 days. As a result, energy transmission resumed quickly, minimizing disruption to both national grids.

Locating the Damage and Securing the Cable

To identify the problem, engineers used shore-based diagnostic tools to detect the faultโ€™s location. They found itย 33 kilometers from the Billdal converter stationย in Sweden. With assistance from a third-party vessel, NKTโ€™s team reached the damaged site and replaced the affected section.

Afterward, the new cable was safely buried deeper beneath the seabed. This precaution protects the system from future external impacts and ensures steady operation for years to come.

NKT Kontiskan 2 Repair Project Strengthens Nordic Energy Reliability

Installed inย 1988ย as an upgrade to the originalย Kontiskan 1, the interconnector remains vital for renewable power exchange between Sweden and Denmark. With the system now fully operational again, both countries benefit from enhanced energy security and regional grid stability.
