NKT Upgrades Denmark–Sweden Power Link with 400 kV XLPE Cables
NKT has upgraded the high-voltage power link between Denmark and Sweden, replacing legacy infrastructure with advanced 400 kV XLPE HVAC power cables.
High-Voltage Cable Upgrade Across Öresund
NKT completed the replacement of four offshore power cables originally installed in 1973. The new system now operates with modern 400 kV XLPE HVAC cables, improving reliability and transmission capacity. Learn more about the company’s capabilities on the official NKT website: https://www.nkt.com
This historic interconnector has linked the power grids of Denmark and Sweden since 1915, enabling cross-border energy exchange.
Supporting Renewable Energy Integration
Interconnectors play a critical role in integrating renewable energy across Europe. The upgraded link across Öresund strengthens grid stability and supports growing energy demands.
The Swedish national grid operator, Svenska Kraftnät (https://www.svk.se), owns the power link and awarded the project to NKT in partnership with Boskalis (https://boskalis.com). NKT also worked closely with Energinet in Denmark: https://energinet.dk
Advanced Manufacturing and Installation
NKT manufactured the new cables at its high-voltage facility in Karlskrona, which operates on 100% green electricity. The project team removed the original oil-filled cables and sent them for recycling before installing the upgraded system.
The legacy cables were originally produced by ASEA, a company now integrated into NKT. Today, the new installation ensures long-term reliability and improved transmission performance.
