Primetals Technologies sells 3 wire rod mills to customer in China’s northern region

Primetals Technologies Secures Wire Rod Mill Contract in China

U.K.-based Primetals Technologies has secured a contract to deliver three high-speed wire rod mills to a major Chinese manufacturer expanding its production capacity.

Advanced Mill Technology and Equipment

The project includes three single-strand, high-speed wire rod mills equipped with Morgan Vee Mini-Blocks for mini-finishing operations. Each mill will feature:

  • Morgan Intelligent Pinch Rolls

  • High-speed laying heads

  • Hydraulic systems

  • Oil lubrication systems

Two mills will operate with two-stand 230 mini-finishing mills, while the third will use a two-stand 250 configuration. Primetals Technologies will also supply air and oil systems for a snap shear and a rollerized turndown, improving efficiency and reliability.

High Output and Performance Capabilities

Each mill will deliver an annual production capacity of 720,000 metric tons. The systems will reach maximum operating speeds of 115 meters per second and achieve rolling rates up to 150 metric tons per hour.

The mills will produce:

  • Wire rod ranging from 5.5 mm to 28 mm in diameter

  • Rebar from 6 mm to 16 mm

  • Coil with 850 mm inner diameter and 1,250 mm outer diameter

Strengthening Production Capabilities

The new mills will enhance thermo-mechanical rolling performance and support expansion at the customer’s main production site. The company, one of northern China’s largest raw material suppliers for fasteners, also produces welding wire and carbon structural steel grades.

Primetals Technologies expects to complete installation and begin operations within the year.
