Prysmian Secures Viking Link Submarine Cable Contract
Prysmian Group has won a major contract for the Viking Link power cable project from National Grid and Energinet. The project will deliver the first submarine cable connection between the U.K. and Denmark, strengthening cross-border energy infrastructure.
Viking Link Power Cable Project Scope
The contract, valued at approximately €700 million, requires Prysmian to handle the turnkey design, manufacturing, and installation of the world’s longest HVDC interconnector.
The project includes:
- 1,250 km of submarine cables
- Approximately 135 km of onshore cables in the U.K.
A separate contract for additional land cables has been awarded to NKT.
Advanced HVDC Cable Technology
The High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) interconnector will operate at ±525 kV DC and enable the transmission of up to 1,400 MW of electricity between Denmark and the United Kingdom.
The cable route will pass through U.K., Dutch, German, and Danish waters. Prysmian will use single-core, mass-impregnated paper-insulated cables to ensure reliable high-capacity transmission.
The system will connect the Bicker Fen converter station in Lincolnshire, U.K., to the Revsing converter station in southern Jutland, Denmark.
Manufacturing and Installation Plans
Prysmian will manufacture all cables at its facility in Arco Felice, Italy. The company will deploy its advanced cable installation vessel to complete offshore installation efficiently.
Strategic Importance for Europe’s Grid
Prysmian leadership emphasized the significance of the project for Europe’s energy future. The Viking Link interconnector will improve grid reliability, enhance renewable energy integration, and support cross-border electricity trading.
The project, jointly owned by Energinet and National Grid, is scheduled for commissioning at the end of 2023.
