SDI LaFarga COPPERWORKS to expand Indiana operations with $32 million project

SDI LaFarga COPPERWORKS will invest $32 million to expand its New Haven, Indiana, plant, adding two new lines and a dozen jobs, with completion targeted by the end of 2027.

SDI LaFarga COPPERWORKS will invest $32 million to expand operations and capabilities at its New Haven, Indiana, plant, which opened in 2011, with completion targeted by the end of 2027.

A press release said the project includes a new manufacturing building, an office building, and new production equipment to enhance efficiency and output. Two new lines for bus bar and copper shape production will expand wire drawing capabilities and increase production capacity and offerings across some of the company’s brands. The initiative will add a dozen employees to its current workforce of about 150.

Company President Jerry Evans said the company is taking advantage of broader domestic reshoring trends that make it easier for U.S.-based manufacturers to reinvest in their facilities. “As companies prioritize domestic supply chains, we are well-positioned to meet that demand through strategic investments like this.”

The New Haven operation is a joint venture between Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) and Spain-based La Farga Group, combining SDI’s recycled metals platform with La Farga’s continuous casting technology. The plant has undergone multiple equipment upgrades and process improvements aimed at increasing efficiency, expanding the product scope, and strengthening its position in the North American market. In 2020, the company invested $16 million to install a second furnace to refine recycled copper to 99.95% purity. To accommodate the furnace, it expanded the building with a 7,500-sq-ft addition. That project, which created more than 20 new jobs, enabled the company to more than double its production capacity.

Evans said the latest expansion “allows us to better serve our customers with high-performance copper solutions while advancing our sustainability goals.”
