Sparkle Launches BlueMed Submarine Cable Project in Italy
Sparkle, an international telecom provider and part of the TIM Group, has announced plans to deploy the BlueMed submarine cable system. This project will connect Palermo and Genoa, strengthening Italy’s role as a digital hub between continents.
BlueMed Submarine Cable System Overview
The BlueMed submarine cable system will span approximately 1,000 km across the Tyrrhenian Sea. It will link Sparkle’s Sicily Hub data center in Palermo with a new open landing station in Genoa.
The system will deliver up to 240 Tbps of capacity, enabling high-speed data transmission across regions.

Connecting Europe, Africa, and Asia
BlueMed will enhance connectivity between Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. It will also connect directly to Milan’s digital ecosystem, improving access to major data exchange hubs.
In addition, the system will include multiple branching units in the Tyrrhenian Sea, allowing for future network expansion south of Sicily.
Reducing Latency and Improving Performance
The new cable system will reduce latency by up to 50% compared to existing terrestrial routes between Sicily and Milan. As a result, businesses and service providers will benefit from faster and more reliable data transmission.
Strengthening Italy as a Digital Gateway
Sparkle’s Genoa landing station will provide a key alternative entry point for submarine cables entering Europe. This infrastructure will support network diversity and resilience while positioning Italy as a strategic digital gateway.
Sparkle operates a global network spanning approximately 530,000 km of fiber, including major systems across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Americas.
