Sumitomo to provide cable for UAE project

A Major Step Toward Modern Energy Infrastructure

Theย Sumitomo Electric HVDC cable projectย marks a major step forward for energy innovation in the Middle East.ย Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd.ย (Official Site) recently secured aย US$200 million orderย fromย Samsung C&T Corporation. The project focuses on delivering advanced HVDC cables for a new submarine power network in the UAE.

Advancing ADNOCโ€™s Project Lightning Initiative

This order supportsย Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC)ย in developingย Project Lightning, the regionโ€™s first largeโ€‘scale submarineย HVDC power network. Once operational inย 2025, it will transmit bulk power betweenย Al Mirfaย on Abu Dhabiโ€™s mainland andย Al Ghallan, an artificial offshore island. Moreover, the project will enhance energy reliability and efficiency across the network.

Engineering Work and Technical Highlights

As part of theย Sumitomo Electric HVDC cable project, the company will supplyย 400 kV DC crossโ€‘linked polyethylene (XLPE) submarine cables. The cables will cover an estimatedย 140 km route, connecting key offshore and onshore facilities. Early engineering work will begin soon, followed by final contract approval and financial decisions in 2022.

Strong Global Collaboration

This effort also brings together several major industry players. Theย EPC consortium, composed ofย Samsung C&Tย andย Jan De Nul Group, will handle construction and implementation. They received the order from a joint venture including:

  • Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO)

  • Kyushu Electric Power Transmission and Distribution Co.

  • Kyuden International Corporation

  • ร‰lectricitรฉ de France (EDF)

Together, these partners aim to advance the regionโ€™s renewable energy infrastructure and global energy connectivity.
