A Major Step Toward Modern Energy Infrastructure

The Sumitomo Electric HVDC cable project marks a major step forward for energy innovation in the Middle East. Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (Official Site) recently secured a US$200 million order from Samsung C&T Corporation. The project focuses on delivering advanced HVDC cables for a new submarine power network in the UAE.

Advancing ADNOC’s Project Lightning Initiative

This order supports Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in developing Project Lightning, the region’s first large‑scale submarine HVDC power network. Once operational in 2025, it will transmit bulk power between Al Mirfa on Abu Dhabi’s mainland and Al Ghallan, an artificial offshore island. Moreover, the project will enhance energy reliability and efficiency across the network.

Engineering Work and Technical Highlights

As part of the Sumitomo Electric HVDC cable project, the company will supply 400 kV DC cross‑linked polyethylene (XLPE) submarine cables. The cables will cover an estimated 140 km route, connecting key offshore and onshore facilities. Early engineering work will begin soon, followed by final contract approval and financial decisions in 2022.

Strong Global Collaboration

This effort also brings together several major industry players. The EPC consortium, composed of Samsung C&T and Jan De Nul Group, will handle construction and implementation. They received the order from a joint venture including:

• Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO)

• Kyushu Electric Power Transmission and Distribution Co.

• Kyuden International Corporation

• Électricité de France (EDF)

Together, these partners aim to advance the region’s renewable energy infrastructure and global energy connectivity.
