Taihan Cable & Solution has received an approval from KEM, a Dutch testing center, for its 525-kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission cable that it said represents the first such one to be certified for a South Korean company.

In a press release, Taihan CEO Song Jong-min announced that the company’s 525kV VSC (Voltage Source Converter) HVDC land cable system was granted certification from KEM. This took place about eight months after the company’s successful development of the first 500kV LCC (Line Commutated Converter) system.

The company said that by increasing the cross-sectional area of the 3,000 sq mm conductor, it was able to raise the allowable conductor temperature to over 90° (194° F). That enables the cable to carry a greater amount of current, a big plus for large-scale power transmission.

The release said that the 525-kV cable is currently the highest voltage among commercialized cables, and that only a few companies in the world have achieved this level of technology. “We have secured unrivaled technological competitiveness in 525kV VSC HVDC cables,” an official from Taihan said. “As investment in power infrastructure expands worldwide, especially in developed markets such as the United States and Europe, we will be able to secure business opportunities in various HVDC projects.”

Once the company completes its submarine cable plant now under construction in Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do, it will accelerate the development and certification of submarine HVDC cable systems. “As the HVDC market continues to expand in the medium to long term, we are committed to ensuring our technological and business competitiveness.”

Taihan Electric Wire (TEW)N announced that it has won a significant power grid project to boost electricity service to Kuwait City, the capital of Kuwait.

A press release said that the order from the Kuwait Ministry of Electricity and Water & Renewable Energy (MEW) is for an extra-high voltage power grid turnkey project valued at in excess of $65 million. The order calls for building an underground power grid between existing substations to help meet electricity demand in Kuwait City. TEW will supply materials such as 300 kV extra-high voltage cables and connectors, and perform power grid design, installation, connection and testing all at once.

The release noted that the bidding conditions were very stringent, and for the 300-400 kV EHV power grids, “only a handful of European and Japanese companies are qualified to bid.” It noted that TEW, which has successfully completed a number of ultra-high voltage turnkey projects ordered by the Kuwait Water and Electricity Authority, “won the project through fierce competition with leading global companies based on its project execution capabilities and technological prowess.”

In other news, the company notes that it has started construction of a factory that will be the first optical cable production corporation in Kuwait. The goal is to complete the construction by the end of the year.

Consus Muju Pinestone PF Real Estate, a subsidiary of South Korea’s major wire supplier, Taihan Electric Wire Co., has sold Pinestone Country Club for 78 billion won ($73.4 million).

Per media accounts, Taihan Electric Wire reported that its real estate investment fund agreed to sell the 680,000-sq-m site in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province Tongyang Leisure and Line Industry. The site includes a golf course and adjacent buildings.

Built in 2006, Pinestone Resort is wholly owned by Consus Muju Pinestone PF Real Estate, in which Taihan Electric Wire has a 71% stake. Taihan said it plans to shed more of its noncore assets so it can focus on its mainstay electric wire business to boost profitability.
