Have you any experience on coating MoS2 on titanium wire/rod used for forgings?

Re_ Molybdenum Disulfide Coatings on Titanium Wire or Rod

I'm sorry because I have no experience at all Richard.

My only experience with MoS2 was in the area of extreme pressure lubricants with 1-15 percent molybdenum disulfide and that is very thin. All we ever did was get hold of our lubricants technical engineer from Shell, Exxon or whatever and get their direct recommendation in writing. Even then, we would cross-check with the gearbox manufacturer or the particular gear company.

Peter,

apparently the MoS2 is applied like you say very thinly. When it dries or is dried the wire/rod is uniformly coated with the material which is apparently fairly durable. It is then put into a forging die an then formed cold? At least that is what I think.

OK I understand where you are going with this thread now.

Normally, when forging titanium and its alloys, the workpiece is heated to temperatures between about 1500° F. to 1800° F.

Lubrication Systems for Warm and Hot Forging Titanium, Nickel and Tungsten
- Warm forging with severe deformation, MoS2 lubricant compounds or graphite compounds are used.
- Hot forging with severe deformation, graphite compounds are used.
- Hot forging with most severe deformation, glass in an aqueous slurry form or powder is used.
