The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Defect

A departure of any quality characteristic from its intended (usually specified). According to ANSI, very serious defects lead directly to severe injury or catastrophic economic loss; serious defects lead directly to significant injury or significant economic loss; major defects are related to major problems with respect to anticipated use; minor defects are related to minor problems with respect to anticipated use.

Defective

A quality control term describing a unit of product or service containing at least one defect, or having several lesser imperfections that, in combination, cause the unit not to fulfill its anticipated function. Note: the term is not necessarily a synonym for nonconforming (or rejectable).

Defectometer

Device used to dynamically measure the surface characteristics of a rod and quantify the physical characteristics as it is being produced. It records voids and inclusions at different levels of importance as a quality evaluation tool.

Defectotherm Test

A technique of in-line eddy current testing. The operating parameters include defect level (dB) and sensitivity (kHz). These are used to quantify indications and record the number of defects per unit of length.

Deflection

The sag of a rope in a given span, usually measured at mid-span as the depth from the chord joining the tops of the two supports. Also, the deformation of a spring on application of load.

Deflection Test

A test where wire is bent through 90 degrees around a mandrel end, then the load is removed and the wire is allowed to spring back, allowing the angle of deflection to be noted. Another method is to wind a wire several times around a mandrel of given diameter under a given tension, then cut the wire and allow it to spring back slowly.

Deformation

Phrase used to describe the actual movement of the product as it changes its shape at the entry of the die. It is the actual displacement of the product during the profile changing process.

Deformation Resistance

Term used for insulating material’s ability to withstand moderate heat without deforming.

Deformation Welding

A form of cold pressure welding where the ends of two wires to be welded are butted together under extreme pressure to the point where metal flows or is deformed to weld them together.

Degassing

A term used during the processing of molten metals to describe the methods used to lower dissolved gases prior to the solidification of the metal. Example: for the aluminum alloying process, inert gases are introduced to cause the oxides within the material to group in clusters so they are large enough to be filtered out of a molten metal filter. The gas bubbles create a surface on which the clusters adhere and are trapped as they move through the filtering media.

Degreasing

Removing oil or grease from a surface.

Degree Rise

The amount increase in temperature caused by the introduction of electricity into a device.

Delay Line

A cable made to provide a very low velocity of propagation with long electrical delay for transmitted signals.

Demand Factor

The ratio of the maximum demand of a system to the total connected load of the system.

Demarcation Point

A point where the operational control or ownership changes.

Demerit Grading

A system established to qualify classifications of aluminum and copper redraw rod. Demerit grading is a quantitative system where surface defects and physical test data are assigned a numerical value or demerits.

Denier

A term that describes the weight of a yarn (not cotton or spun rayon) that, in turn, determines its physical size.

Density

The weight of a metal within a defined volume. Usually expressed in grams per cubic centimeter or in pounds per cubic inch.

Dent

A single wire in the composition of a wire reed used in weaving. Also used to refer to the space between any two wires in a reed.

Deoxidize

The removal of oxygen from a batch of molten metal. In steel, oxygen is present as iron oxide, which is dissolved in the steel and can be removed by adding a deoxidizing agent such as manganese, silicon or aluminum. Deoxidation is usually done to help prevent gas porosity and oxygen from combining with the base metal and causing harmful effects on properties.
