The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Equivalent Round Tube

What a non-round tube would have if its uneven wall thickness were equated to an average wall thickness and the same weight per linear foot.

Erosion

The abrasion of metal or other material by liquid or gas, usually accelerated by pressure of solid particles of matter in suspension and sometimes by corrosion.

ESS

Designation for Extruded Strand Shield. See Conductor Stress Control.

Ester

Reaction product of an alcohol and an acid.

Etch Test

Used to detect inclusions in steel. A common method of making the test is to dip the sample into acid, which reacts with the inclusions and discloses their presence.

Etched Wire

A process applied to fluoro plastic wire in which the wire is passed through a sodium bath to create a rough surface to allow epoxy resin to bond the fluoro plastic.

Etching

1) Treatment of prepared metal surfaces with acid or other reagents that, by differential attack, reveal the structure for metallographic examination. 2) Also, passing a wire several times through an electrolytic cell system to dissolve the surface layers and thus reduces its diameter.

ETFE

Designation for a copolymer of ethylene and tetraflouroethylene. This high temperature resin is well suited for wire insulation. It can withstand an unusual amount of physical abuse during and after installation, has very good electrical characteristics. Good thermal and low temperature properties, and chemical inertness.

Ethernet

A local area network (LAN) that uses the CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection) access method on a bus topography.

Ethylene Copolymers, Non-Halogen

An insulation material that combines attributes of polyethylene and polypropylene to provide a high level of flame resistance and low smoke production. See Halogen-Free.

Ethylene Oxide Exposure

Technique used for sterilization of wire used in the medical field, where relatively high temperatures of an autoclave cannot be tolerated. Referred to as “ETO” sterilization.

Ethylene-Propylene Rubbers

These materials offer excellent resistance to ozone and weathering, good low-temperature properties, good-to-excellent heat resistance and high-temperature properties, and excellent electrical properties. Used primarily as an insulation material.

ETPC

See Electrolytic Tough Pitch Copper.

Eutectic

A term related to the lowest possible melting point of a material. This can apply to an alloy or a solution.

Eutectoid Steel

Steel that in the annealed condition consists entirely of pearlite. This steel contains about 0.78 percent carbon in a pure iron-carbon alloy. In alloy steels, the eutectoid carbon content is usually lower. Steels with less than the eutectoid carbon content are known as hypo-eutectoid and contain free ferrite as well as pearlite. Steels with more carbon are known as hyper-eutectoid and contain free cementite.

EVA

Designation for Ethylene Vinyl Acetate.

EX

Designation for thermocouple cable.

Exact Lengths, Ends Taken

Exact lengths together with the shorter lengths resulting from the cutting to length operation; sometimes called exact lengths and shorts.

Exchange Cable

Cables used in communication distribution networks between service drops and individual subscribers.

Excitation Losses

Losses in transformer or electrical machine because of voltage.
