The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

RLJFJ

Designation for rubber insulated cable with lead, jute, flat band armor and overall jute covering.

RLJWJ

Designation for rubber insulated cable with lead, jute, steel wire armor and overall jute covering.

RM

Designation for a UL-type rubber insulated multiple conductor with fibrous covering.

RML

Designation for a UL-type rubber insulated multiple conductor with lead covering.

RMS

See Root Mean Square.

RMS Current

See Root Mean Square Current.

RMS Voltage

Designation for the effective root-mean-square voltage in an AC circuit.

Rockwell Hardness Test

A test to determine hardness by measuring the depth of the impression caused by an indenter in the form of either a diamond cone or a hardened steel ball. Not typically performed on wire below 3.2 mm (0.125 in.) in diameter.

Rod

The solid round form of metal that is the most effective shape from which to draw wire. Rod is commonly drawn into wire products or used to make bolts, nails and other machined parts.

Rod Mill

1) A mill that produces rod. It can be a billet rolling operation or an integral part of a continuous casting facility. 2) In the steel industry, it can be a mill for fine grinding, somewhat similar to the ball mill, but employing long steel rods instead of balls as the grinding medium.

Roke

A longitudinal surface defect caused by either a blowhole that has perforated the surface and become oxidized, or an inclusion at the surface.

Roll

A length of a flat rolled product wound into cylindrical spiral except Stagger Wound Roll.

Roll Diameter Calculator Circuit

An electrical circuit used in conjunction with a wire-tensioning regulator and which requires a DC tachometer on the centerwind reel motor for speed indication purposes. Its main advantage is that it provides for taking the reel build-up range by any desired amount of field control while the remainder of the range is automatically taken by the armature voltage.

Roll Forming

1) A rolling mill operation used in forming metal sheet. Strips of sheet are passed between rolls of definite settings that bend the sheet progressively into structural members of various contours, sometimes called “molded sections.” 2) A rolling process of coiling metal sheet into open cylinders.

Roll Mark

A raised area on the metal sheet caused by the imprint of a pit or depression in the rolls during the rolling operation.

Roll Scale

Oxide of the basic metals that form on the surface of metal while it is being heated and rolled. Much of the scale is cracked and loosened during the rolling operation and may fall off the piece naturally or it may be blown off by high-pressure water sprays or other means.

Roll Straightening

The process of straightening wire, rod and bar by passing it lengthwise through a machine with suitable rolls so as to repeatedly flex the product.

Roll Table

A conveyer-type table surface that contains a series of small rolls over which metal products pass during processing.

Roll Threading

Applying a thread to a bolt or screw by rolling the piece between two grooved die plates, one of which is in motion, or between rotating grooved circular rolls.

Rolled Edge

A finished edge, the final contour of a rolled sheet of metal that is produced by side or edging rolls. The edge of a universal plate has when rolled by vertical, as well as horizontal rolls. On these plates, edge shearing is not necessary. The edge contours most commonly used are square corners, rounded corners and rounded edge.
