Australia drops Huawei from subsea cable project for political reasons

Vocus Selected for Solomon Islands Submarine Cable Project After Security Shift

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs has selected Vocus Group to begin work on a new submarine cable system linking Australia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. This Vocus Solomon Islands submarine cable project replaces an earlier plan that involved Huawei due to ongoing security concerns.

Vocus Solomon Islands Submarine Cable Project Begins Planning Phase

To begin with, Vocus Group (https://www.vocus.com.au) secured a $2.8 million contract to carry out a scoping study. This phase will define the design, construction, and procurement of the new cable system.

As a result, the project moves forward with a trusted regional provider experienced in delivering large-scale subsea infrastructure.

Proven Track Record in Subsea Cable Development

Vocus brings strong experience to the project. For example, the company developed the North-West Cable System and the Australia-Singapore Cable, strengthening connectivity across the region.

These projects demonstrate Vocus’s capability to deliver reliable and high-capacity submarine networks.

Security Concerns Prompt Strategic Change

Previously, the Solomon Islands had selected Huawei (https://www.huawei.com) for the project. However, Australian officials raised concerns about national security risks.

Notably, Australia had already restricted Huawei’s involvement in the National Broadband Network (NBN) due to advice from security agencies.

Therefore, the government shifted the project to Vocus to ensure greater data security and infrastructure control.

Strengthening Regional Connectivity

Ultimately, this submarine cable system will improve digital connectivity across the Pacific region. It will also support economic development and enhance communication between Australia and its neighboring countries.

As demand for secure and reliable networks grows, projects like this play a key role in shaping the region’s digital infrastructure future.
