Ube Industries Admits Falsified Quality Reports on Cable Materials
Ube Industries, a major Japanese chemical company, has admitted that it provided falsified quality reports for products used in power and telecommunications cables. The disclosure raises concerns about quality control practices in critical infrastructure materials.
Quality Control Failures Identified
Company president Yuzuru Yamamoto confirmed that Ube Industries skipped required quality-control checks for some low-density polyethylene products. The company produced these materials at its facility in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture.
Ube used these polyethylene products to insulate cables, making them essential for power and telecom networks.

Joint Venture Supplied Affected Products
Ube-Maruzen Polyethylene Co., a joint venture with Maruzen Petrochemical Co. (https://www.cosmo-oil.co.jp/en/company/group/marupetro/), sold the affected materials to approximately 50 clients, including wire manufacturers.
The company issued bogus inspection reports to meet customer documentation requirements, despite not completing the required testing procedures.
Internal Investigation and Client Notification
After identifying the issue in December, Ube Industries conducted internal checks to confirm that the product quality remained intact. The company then notified its clients about the findings.
To address the issue, Ube Industries (https://www.ube.com) has established an independent investigation panel that includes external lawyers and directors.
Corporate Response and Accountability
Yamamoto publicly acknowledged the issue and issued an apology, stating that the company regrets the inconvenience and concern caused to its customers and partners.
