LS GreenLink USA Launches $680 Million Cable Plant in Virginia
South Koreaโs LS Cable & System Ltd. (LS C&S) is expanding in the U.S. through its subsidiary LS GreenLink USA, Inc. On April 28, the company broke ground on a $680 million submarine power cable facility in Chesapeake, Virginia, marking a major milestone in its global growth strategy.
The 97-acre site will begin initial operations by late 2027 and reach full capacity in early 2028. In its first phase, the project will create over 330 jobs, and additional expansions could follow as demand increases.
Meanwhile, LS C&S expects the U.S. subsea cable market to grow more than 30% yearly in the next decade. The Chesapeake plant will offer full high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea cable manufacturing and logistics services, further strengthening the clean energy supply chain.
โThe LS GreenLink plant marks a turning point for LS Cable & System as we move toward becoming a global energy infrastructure leader,โ said CEO Koo Bon-kyu.
Additionally, in March 2024, the project received $99 million in tax credits under Section 48C of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Other companies gained similar support, including Hellenic Cables Americas, which earned up to $58 million for a new facility in Baltimore, Maryland.
In contrast, Prysmian dropped its plan to open a cable plant in Massachusetts after announcing it in 2022. Although many reports tied the decision to offshore wind policy changes, the company said it was unrelated to political factors.
Overall, the Chesapeake project highlights LS C&Sโs commitment to expanding clean energy infrastructure and boosting U.S. manufacturing. To learn more, visit LS Cable & Systemโs official website.
