NTT unit launches new cable-laying vessel to serve strong regional power demands

NTT WE Marine launched the Philippine-flagged CS VEGA II to enhance submarine cable services, marking 25 years in the country. It will support domestic and regional telecom infrastructure, contributing to the Philippine Domestic Submarine Cable Network and broader communications stability amid global security concerns.

NTT WE Marine Launches Philippine-Flagged Vessel CS VEGA II

NTT World Engineering Marine Corp. (NTT WE Marine), a subsidiary of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT), has launched the CS VEGA II, a state-of-the-art submarine cable-laying vessel registered under the Philippine flag. The milestone coincides with NTT WE Marineโ€™s 25th anniversary in the Philippines, underscoring its continued commitment to expanding regional connectivity.

Strengthening Connectivity and Local Capacity

Equipped with the latest undersea cable technology, the CS VEGA II will perform both domestic and international cable maintenance. Operated mainly by a skilled Filipino crew, the vessel ensures faster and more resilient communication services across the region. In addition, it joins NTT WE Marineโ€™s growing fleet, which includes the VEGA, ORION, SUBARU, and KIZUNA. Together, these vessels handle installation, surveys, maintenance, and repair projects that support global telecommunications networks.

Because of its Philippine registration, the CS VEGA II also highlights the companyโ€™s dedication to boosting local employment and training opportunities within the maritime industry. Furthermore, it positions NTT WE Marine as the only cable provider to operate a fully equipped Philippine-flagged vessel, setting it apart in regional operations.

Supporting the Philippine Domestic Submarine Cable Network

NTT WE Marine continues to play a crucial role in the Philippine Domestic Submarine Cable Network (PDSCN). This 2,500-kilometer initiative, led by Eastern CommunicationsGlobe Telecom, and InfiniVAN, aims to improve connectivity in underserved parts of the country.

As of now, the subsea cable segments were completed in 2023, and roughly 90% of the 33 planned landing stations are operational. Additionally, inland connections are expected to wrap up later this year, moving the project closer to full service. Once finalized, the PDSCN will dramatically enhance network capacity across the Philippines.

Investing in Stability and Future Growth

NTT WE Marine President and CEO Mamoru Watanabe emphasized that secure communications drive modern economies. He noted that as global security grows more complex, stable telecom infrastructure becomes even more essential.

โ€œEconomic developmentโ€™s foundation is communication. Thereโ€™s a lot of opportunity in the Philippines, especially now that global security is unstable,โ€ said Watanabe.

Looking ahead, NTT WE Marine aims to expand its role in undersea communications and continue supporting both regional growth and global network stability. For more details, visit NTT WE Marineโ€™s official website.
