Primetals/Southwire sell 2 identical SCR rod mills to Chinese company

Ningbo Jintian Copper Expands Capacity with Southwire SCR 7000 Mills

Ningbo Jintian Copper (Group) Co. Ltd (NJC) has signed new contracts with Southwire Company LLC to install two identical SCR 7000 copper rod mills, supplied by Primetals Technologies. This investment supports NJC’s strategy to expand production and enter new geographic markets.

Southwire SCR 7000 Copper Rod Mills Boost Production

The Southwire SCR 7000 copper rod mills will operate in two key locations. NJC will install the first mill in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and the second in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. The company plans to launch the first mill in summer 2019 and the second in early 2020.

These additions will increase NJC’s total installed capacity to nearly 1 million metric tons annually, strengthening its position in the global copper market.

Advanced Copper Rod Mill Technology and Capabilities

Primetals Technologies will handle the engineering, manufacturing, and commissioning of the mills. The systems will produce electrolytic tough pitch (ETP) copper, widely used in the construction wire and cable industry.

Each mill will feature a Morgan No-Twist mill with 13 independently driven roll stands. This setup enables high-efficiency production of copper rods in multiple sizes, including 8 mm to 25 mm diameters, at speeds of up to 48 metric tons per hour.

Each facility will deliver an annual production capacity of approximately 315,000 metric tons.

Comprehensive Equipment and System Integration

Each mill will include advanced equipment designed to improve performance and product quality. Key components include:

  • Entry shear and roughing mill stands for initial processing
  • Finishing mill stands with hydraulic roll mounting for precision
  • Rod cooling and cleaning systems for improved surface quality
  • Inline recirculating coil handling systems for efficient operations

In addition, the setup incorporates coilers, pinch rolls, lubrication systems, and automated material handling solutions to streamline production.

Long-Term Industry Collaboration

NJC has grown into one of China’s largest copper processing manufacturers since its founding in 1986. The company ranks among the country’s top 500 enterprises.

Meanwhile, Southwire and Primetals Technologies have collaborated for more than 50 years. Together, they have delivered over 110 nonferrous mills and completed more than 40 modernization projects, demonstrating a strong track record in advanced metal processing solutions.
