South Korean agency certifies LS Cable & System for its HVDC cables

LS Cable & System Secures HVDC Cable Certification for Global Expansion

The LS Cable HVDC cable certification marks a major advancement in high-voltage transmission technology. With this approval, LS Cable & System strengthens its position in the global energy infrastructure market and expands its ability to export advanced cable solutions.

LS Cable HVDC Cable Certification Confirms Technology Reliability

LS Cable & System completed a long-term reliability test for its 500 kV HVDC cable, which the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) monitored over six months. Following this evaluation, KERI officially certified the company’s HVDC technology.

As a result, LS Cable & System can now export its HVDC cables without additional testing. This certification places the company among only five global manufacturers with proprietary HVDC cable technology.

Advanced HVDC Technology and Market Advantages

LS Cable & System began developing HVDC technology in 2005. Soon after, it secured a contract for South Korea’s first overland HVDC transmission project between North Dangjin and Godeok.

Compared to traditional AC transmission systems, HVDC offers clear advantages. For example, it enables more efficient long-distance power transmission while reducing energy loss. In addition, HVDC systems often require lower overall investment costs, making them attractive for large-scale energy projects.

Market Growth and Future Opportunities

According to South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the global HVDC market reached an estimated value of 70 trillion won by 2020. As demand grows, LS Cable & System continues to benefit from its strong technical expertise and proven solutions.

The company reported a 13% increase in revenue, reaching 3.5 trillion won ($3.25 billion). At the same time, operating profit rose by 33% to 111.3 billion won, reflecting strong business performance.

Looking ahead, LS Cable & System expects further growth as South Korea advances its northern economic cooperation strategy. Since North and South Korea use different voltage and frequency systems, HVDC technology provides an effective solution for cross-border power transmission.
