The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. The point of emergence of telecommunications conductors through an exterior wall, a concrete floor slab, or from a rigid metal conduit or intermediate metal conduit.

Entrance Room or Space, Telecommunications

A space in which the joining of inter- or intra-building telecommunications backbone facilities takes place. An entrance room may also serve as an equipment room.

Environmental Cracking

Environmental Cracking

EO

Designation for elevator lighting and control cable that has rubber insulation, cotton braid, neoprene jacket. May have steel supporting strand in center, 300V.

EP

Designations for synthetic rubber based upon ethylene-propylene hydrocarbon.

EPA

Designation for Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. federal regulatory agency responsible for keeping and improving the quality of the living environment, mainly air and water.

EPCV

See Rubber, EPCV.

EPDM

1.)Designations for synthetic rubber based upon ethylene-propylene hydrocarbon.

EPM

Designations for synthetic rubber based upon ethylene-propylene hydrocarbon.

EPOS

Designation for electronic point-of-sale.

Epoxy Resins

A thermosetting resin based on the reactivity of the epoxide group. These straight-chain resins can be used for applications such as potting connectors and some in-field splicing kits. They were once used as enamels for magnet wire. The use of expoxies was at a peak when the transformer industry was using materials such as askarek in transformers.

EPR

Designations for synthetic rubber based upon ethylene-propylene hydrocarbon.

Epsomite

A naturally occurring form of magnesium sulfate that is a source of magnesium salts. This water-soluble mineral is better known in most households as Epsom salt.

Equal Load Sharing

An even distribution of current between the parallel cables in a power circuit.

Equilay

More than one layer of helically laid wires with the direction of lay reversed for successive layers, but with the length of lay the same for each layer.

Equilibrium

Properties that are constant due to balance of equal action of opposing forces.

Equipment Room, Telecommunications

A centralized space for telecommunications equipment that serves the occupants of the building. An equipment room is considered distinct from a telecommunications closet because of the nature of complexity or the equipment.

Equipotential

Having the same voltage at all points.

Equivalent Circuit

An arrangement of circuit elements that has characteristics over a range of interest electrically equivalent to those of a different circuit or device.

Equivalent Round

The diameter of a circle having a circumference equal to the outside perimeter of a given shape or tube.
