NKT Secures Inch Cape Offshore Wind Export Cable Agreement
NKT has signed a Pre-Construction Agreement (PCA) to deliver the Inch Cape offshore wind export cable system for a major renewable energy project in the United Kingdom. This agreement strengthens NKT’s position in the offshore wind energy sector and highlights its role in renewable infrastructure development.
The project is being developed by Inch Cape Offshore Wind Farm Ltd., a subsidiary of Red Rock Power Ltd. Learn more at https://www.redrockpower.co.uk.
Partnership with Boskalis
Under the agreement, NKT will collaborate with Boskalis Subsea Cables & Flexibles as part of a consortium. The consortium will act as the exclusive supplier and installer of the export cable system. Boskalis will lead the installation phase, reinforcing its expertise in subsea cable projects. Visit https://boskalis.com for details.
Project Scope and Technical Details
The project requires approximately 170 kilometers of 220 kV AC offshore export cables. NKT will manufacture these cables at one of its high-voltage power cable plants. Explore more at https://www.nkt.com.
The estimated project value ranges between €80 million and €120 million. The offshore wind farm will be located in the North Sea, about 15 miles off Scotland’s east coast.
Infrastructure and Grid Connection
The wind farm will use a network of low-voltage cables to connect wind turbines to offshore substations. Up to two offshore platforms will collect and transmit electricity.
Export cables will bring power ashore at Cockenzie, East Lothian. From there, underground cables will carry electricity to an onshore substation, where systems will convert it to national grid voltage. Additional cables will connect to the Cockenzie power station substation.
Project Timeline and Industry Impact
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2020, with cable installation planned for 2022. Once completed, the Inch Cape project will support the UK’s renewable energy capacity.
NKT Interim CEO Roland Andersen stated that securing the role of exclusive supplier reinforces NKT’s leadership in the offshore wind market.
