ASN Secures Southern Cross NEXT Submarine Cable Contract
Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN), a business of Nokia, has secured a major agreement for the Southern Cross NEXT submarine cable project. The project will deliver ultra-low latency connectivity between key data hubs in Sydney, Auckland, and Los Angeles.
Southern Cross NEXT Submarine Cable Project Overview
The Southern Cross NEXT submarine cable project represents a $350 million investment in next-generation digital infrastructure. Built on an open-cable architecture, the system will add 72 Tbps of capacity to existing Southern Cross networks.
This upgrade significantly expands current capacity levels and supports increasing demand for high-speed data transmission.

Low Latency and High-Capacity Connectivity
The new cable system will deliver the lowest latency connection between the U.S. West Coast and major data centers in Australia and New Zealand. As a result, businesses and service providers will benefit from faster and more reliable connectivity.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2021.
Expanding South Pacific Connectivity
The system will also enhance connectivity across the South Pacific region. It will provide direct links for:
- Fiji
- Tokelau
- Kiribati
In addition, the network will strengthen existing connections for Vanuatu, Samoa, and Tonga.
Advanced Network Technology and Infrastructure
The cable will deliver full fiber connectivity to Auckland and incorporate advanced technologies such as:
- Branching Units (BU)
- Optical Add-Drop Multiplexing (OADM)
These technologies enable flexible and scalable network connections across multiple regions.
Project milestones include completed marine surveys, as well as established landing infrastructure in Sydney, Los Angeles, and Auckland.
