AMSC to supply its superconductor technology for electric grid in Chicago

AMSC Secures Settlement and Advances Chicago Grid Project

AMSC (American Superconductor Corporation) has reached a $57.5 million settlement with Sinovel Wind Group Co. Ltd. while also advancing a major electric grid project in Chicago. These developments mark a significant step forward for the company’s technology and growth strategy.

AMSC Sinovel Settlement and Chicago Grid Project

The AMSC Sinovel settlement and Chicago grid project highlights both legal resolution and infrastructure expansion. Sinovel agreed to pay $57.5 million in two installments to settle claims related to technology theft dating back to 2011. In addition, a federal judge imposed a $1.5 million fine, closing a major chapter in the long-running dispute.

Chicago Grid Upgrade with Superconductor Technology

At the same time, AMSC has partnered with Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) to upgrade Chicago’s power grid. ComEd delivers electricity to more than four million customers in northern Illinois.

This project will deploy AMSC’s high-temperature superconductor technology as part of a broader effort to improve grid performance and reliability.

Resilient Electric Grid (REG) System Benefits

AMSC will install its Resilient Electric Grid (REG) system in Chicago. This marks the first deployment of the system in the city, where it is expected to become a permanent part of the power infrastructure.

The REG system uses Amperium® wire, a key component that enhances:

  • Grid reliability and redundancy
  • Protection against extreme weather and physical disruptions
  • Resistance to cyber threats and equipment failures

As a result, the system helps reduce outages and strengthens overall grid resilience.

Government Support and Infrastructure Investment

The project receives partial funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate. AMSC, ComEd, and DHS share project costs under a cooperative agreement.

This collaboration supports efforts to modernize critical infrastructure and protect the grid from emerging risks.
