The Wire Association International (WAI), Inc., based inย Madison, Connecticut, USA, has appointedย Kurt F. Breischaftย as itsย 70th presidentย for a oneโ€‘year term beginningย January 1, 2023. In this role, he chairs the WAI Board of Directors and helps guide the 93โ€‘yearโ€‘old associationโ€™s strategy and education agenda.

WAI appoints Kurt Breischaft 2023 president after he builtย more than 30 years of experience in the copper industry. He currently serves asย president of SDI LaFarga COPPERWORKS, a copper rod and wire mill inย New Haven, Indiana, a position he has held sinceย November 2013. Previously, he held roles of increasing responsibility, includingย vice president and general managerย ofย Cerro Plumbing, part ofย Marmon Group/Berkshire Hathaway. He also worked asย plant managerย forย Belden Americas โ€“ Nogales, Mexicoย andย Belden/Thermax, and earlier served asย process engineer, engineering manager, plant manager, and manufacturing managerย atย Essex Group, Inc./Superior Essex.

An active WAI member sinceย 2000, Breischaft received theย WAI Wire Link Scholarshipย inย 2006. Over the years, he has taken on multiple volunteer roles, including:

  • Servingย two termsย on theย WAI Board of Directors

  • Contributing to theย Executive Committeeย andย Oversight Committee

  • Chairing theย Member Relations Committee

  • Acting asย Executive Committee liaisonย to theย Finance,ย Memorial Awards, andย Education Committees

During his term as WAI president in 2023, he also serves asย Coโ€‘Chair of the Conference Programming Committee,ย Chair of the Oversight Committee, andย Executive Committee liaisonย to theย Education Committee.

Commenting on his appointment, Breischaft said he looks forward to advancing WAIโ€™s latest education initiative, developingย multimedia training modules, and building on WAIโ€™s legacy technical handbooks. He emphasized that these tools will support theย next generation of engineers and operatorsย in the wire and cable industry.

Breischaft holds aย B.S. degree in electrical engineeringย from theย Roseโ€‘Hulman Institute of Technologyย inย Terre Haute, Indiana, USA. He also earned anย M.B.A.ย fromย Indiana Wesleyan Universityย inย Marion, Indiana, USA. This mix of technical and business training underpins both his corporate and association leadership roles.
