Danieli reports it will build Australiaโ€™s 1st greenfield steel mill in 4 decades

Alter Steel has selected Danieli to equip a $750 million greenfield steel mill in Pinkenba, Queensland, that will use MIDA QLP minimill technology with Digimelter and Q-One power feeder to turn local scrap into 500,000 metric tons per year of long products while cutting COโ‚‚ emissions about 80% versus blast furnaces by 2027.

Italyโ€‘based Danieli (https://www.danieli.com) supplies technology and equipment for Alter Steelโ€™s new electric steel plant in Pinkenba, Queensland, Australia, anchoring the Danieli greenfield electric steel mill for Alter Steel in Queensland project. Alter Steel plans to invest about $750 million in this landmark longโ€‘products facility.

Danieli uses its MIDA QLP โ€“ Quality Long Product technology with the Digimelter and Qโ€‘One power feeder to enable lowโ€‘carbon electric steelmaking. The plant produces about 500,000 metric tons per year of rebar, wire rod, hotโ€‘rolled mesh, spooled coil, and bar, all from steel scrap.

The mill runs an endless castingโ€‘rolling process and removes billet reheating. This configuration can cut energy use by up to 75% and improve overall operating efficiency.

According to Green Steel World, Alter Steel targets late 2027 for completion and already holds Conditional Development Approval. The Danieli greenfield electric steel mill for Alter Steel in Queensland project can run on 100% renewable energy and aims for about 0.37 metric tons of CO2 per tonne of steel, roughly 80% less than traditional blast furnaces.
