Furukawa Electric reports winning contract to supply Philippines subsea power project

Furukawa Electric Philippines Subsea Cable Project Strengthens Power Infrastructure

Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. has secured a contract from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) for a major subsea power transmission project. The Furukawa Electric Philippines subsea cable project marks another step forward in improving the Philippines’ energy reliability and transmission capacity across the Visayas region.

The order, worth €33 million, highlights Furukawa’s leadership in high-voltage cable technology and sustainable infrastructure development.

Delivering the World’s Largest-Class Subsea Cable

Furukawa Electric will supply 230 kV AC XLPE-insulated, 1600 mm² triple-core submarine cables—the largest conductor size class of its kind worldwide. The system also includes advanced temperature and load monitoring technology to ensure stable operations.

Through efficient planning, Furukawa expects to complete manufacturing and delivery by 2023. This timeline reflects the company’s commitment to precision, high performance, and on-time energy project execution.

Connecting Cebu and Lapulapu for Stronger Grid Support

The new submarine cable will link the Cebu Substation to the Lapulapu Substation in the Visayas region. This connection will boost grid capacity and stabilize power transmission between Mandaue and Mactan.

Moreover, the system will maintain continuous power delivery even under an N-1 contingency condition, ensuring reliable electricity flow during equipment outages or maintenance.

Supporting National Energy Modernization

The Furukawa Electric Philippines subsea cable project plays a key role in modernizing the country’s power infrastructure. By expanding transmission between major islands, the system will reduce risk of power disruption and ensure efficient energy distribution to growing economic and industrial centers.

In addition, Furukawa continues to invest in high-performance cable systems that support both traditional and renewable energy networks.

A Global Leader in Power Transmission Solutions

Established in 1884, Furukawa Electric remains a global innovator in advanced cable technologies. The company delivers solutions for power, communication, and industrial sectors worldwide. With this project, it further strengthens its presence in Asia’s growing energy market.
