LS Cable & System Begins Mass Production of Aluminum EV Wires
LS Cable & System (LS C&S)ย has started mass-producingย aluminum wires for electric vehicles, marking a significant shift in automotive wiring technology. The company invests heavily in aluminum as competition intensifies across theย EV industry.
Aluminum EV Wires Reduce Vehicle Weight
According to The Korea Herald, LS C&S expanded its investment inย aluminum wires for electric vehiclesย based on industry forecasts. Specifically,ย aluminum conductor wiresย weighย 40% less than conventional copper wires. Consequently, they reduce total wire weight fromย 25 kg per vehicle to approximately 15 kg.
This weight reduction improves vehicle efficiency. Moreover, it supports automakers’ goals to extendย EV driving rangeย and performance.
Dedicated Aluminum Wire Production Facility
LS C&S built a factory exclusively forย aluminum wire productionย in South Korea. Importantly, the company separated production facilities because copper particles can corrode aluminum when combined. Similarly, many Japanese companies are also building aluminum-only facilities to prevent contamination.

Growing Market for Aluminum EV Wires
The company projects thatย aluminum wiresย will represent more thanย 30% of the domestic wire market by 2025. In contrast, they currently hold aboutย 5% market share. This demonstrates rapid industry adoption of lightweight wiring solutions.
Currently, LS C&S suppliesย aluminum wires for electric vehiclesย to South Korea’s largest automakers,ย Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors. Additionally, the firm leveragesย LS Alsco, a subsidiary specializing in the aluminum business, to supply high-strength aluminum materials.
Future Expansion Plans
LS Cable & System emphasized its integrated production capabilities. Notably, the company produces materials and finished wire products in batches through LS Alsco. Furthermore, LS C&S is considering additional investments as it prepares to sign a supply contract with a global wiring harness company.
