Mid Continent Steel & Wire Secures Tariff Exemptions
Mid Continent Steel & Wire has received approval for most of its requested tariff exemptions on Mexican steel wire under Section 232. The decision from the U.S. Department of Commerce (DoC) provides critical relief for the Missouri-based manufacturer.
Mid Continent Steel Wire Tariff Exemptions Impact
The Mid Continent steel wire tariff exemptions allow the company to resume operations and recover lost production capacity. Previously, the 25% tariffs significantly reduced business activity and forced workforce reductions.
Before the tariffs took effect in June 2018, the company employed around 500 workers. However, declining orders led to a drop below 300 employees. With the new exemptions, Mid Continent has started recalling approximately 50 workers.

Supporting U.S. Manufacturing Recovery
Mid Continent is the largest nail manufacturer in the United States and operates as part of Deacero (https://www.deacero.com). The company produces Magnum nails and supplies key construction and industrial markets.
Company leadership emphasized that the exemptions will help restore operations and support local jobs in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.
Temporary Relief and Ongoing Challenges
Although the exemptions provide immediate benefits, they will remain valid for one year only. As a result, Mid Continent must apply for continued relief to maintain stability.
The company previously lost about 60% of its business, cut temporary positions, and saw additional workforce reductions due to uncertainty. Rebuilding operations will take time as the company works to regain market share.
Rare Approval Highlights Significance
Section 232 exemptions are rarely granted, making this decision especially important for the company and the regional economy. The approval allows Mid Continent to strengthen production and support U.S. manufacturing competitiveness.
