NEC to provide submarine cables and more for Japanese telecom company

NEC Secures Japan Submarine Cable Project Connecting Okinawa and Kagoshima

The NEC Okinawa Kagoshima submarine cable project represents a major step in strengthening Japan’s digital infrastructure. NEC Corporation has secured the contract to deliver an optical submarine cable system linking Okinawa Prefecture and Kagoshima Prefecture. As a result, the project will improve regional connectivity by April 2020.

NEC Okinawa Kagoshima submarine cable project details

The system will span approximately 760 kilometers and connect Nago City (Okinawa) to Hioki City (Kagoshima). In addition, it will reach depths of up to 1,200 meters.

The project will use advanced optical wavelength multiplex transmission technology. Therefore, it will deliver a maximum design capacity of 80 Tbps, ensuring fast and reliable communications.

Turnkey Solution and Advanced Manufacturing

NEC will deliver the system as a full turnkey solution, including design, manufacturing, installation, and testing.

Meanwhile, its subsidiary OCC Corporation (https://www.occjp.com) will manufacture the cables. Notably, OCC is the only company in Japan that produces deep-sea submarine cables capable of withstanding pressures at depths of up to 8,000 meters.

Comprehensive Submarine Cable Capabilities

As a system integrator, NEC will manage every stage of the project. For example, the company will handle:

  • Optical transmission terminal stations
  • Submarine repeaters and cables
  • Ocean surveys and route design
  • Installation and system integration
  • Testing, training, and final delivery

As a result, this approach ensures efficient deployment and reliable performance.

Supporting Japan’s Digital Infrastructure

Overall, the project will strengthen Japan’s telecommunications network. It will also improve regional connectivity and support rising demand for high-speed data transmission.
