Nexans creates subsea cable designed for a world-record depth of 550 meters

Nexans Sets Record with 420 kV Subsea Cable Project

The Nexans subsea cable record marks a major step forward in power transmission technologyNexans, a global leader in cabling systems and solutions, has completed final testing of its 420 kV XLPE subsea cable. As a result, the cable can operate at a record depth of 550 meters.

Nexans Subsea Cable Record Achievement

To meet project requirements, Nexans Norway carried out extensive qualification testing. The cable will serve a major installation in Fensfjorden, near Bergen, Norway. The fjord stretches about eight kilometers wide and reaches depths of 526 meters. Therefore, it presents a challenging environment for subsea installation.

Supporting Norway’s Power Grid

Meanwhile, the project supports a major upgrade led by BKK Nett AS, one of Norway’s largest energy providers. Specifically, the plan includes a new 420 kV connection between Modalen and Mongstad.

This upgrade will deliver stable electricity to more than 420,000 residents, businesses, and industrial users. In turn, it will strengthen the reliability of the regional power grid.

Advancing Cable Technology

At the same time, Nexans continues to push engineering limits. Project Manager Ivar Rolfstad highlighted the company’s achievement and its focus on innovation.

Notably, this project surpasses Nexans’ previous record. Earlier, the company installed a 20-kilometer cable at a depth of 390 meters in Hjeltefjorden, Norway.

Manufacturing and Installation

Nexans developed and manufactured the cable at its facility in Halden, Norway. Next, the company will install it using the C/S Nexans Skagerrak, a specialized cable-laying vessel.

This approach ensures accurate placement on the seabed and supports long-term system reliability.
