Nexans launches new cable laying vessel

Nexans Aurora Cable Laying Vessel Nears Completion

Nexansโ€™ย newย Cable Laying Vessel (CLV) Nexans Auroraย has moved another step toward completion asย Ulstein Verftย in Norway launches the vessel. The ship measures 149.9 m in length and 31 m in width. It will serve theย offshore renewables market, installing subsea power cables and interconnectors. For more on subsea solutions, visitย Nexans.

Purpose-built for Offshore Renewables

Nexans Aurora will installย subsea cablesย that connectย offshore wind farms to the grid, as well asย interconnector systemsย for cross-border power links. Earlier, the hull arrived atย Ulstein Verftย in June. The yard then positioned it inside the covered dock hall to maintain stable working conditions. During this phase, the team completedย electrical installations,ย insulation work, and installation of keyย main equipmentย andย cable lay systems. To learn more about the shipbuilder, seeย Ulstein.

Final Outfitting and Commissioning

Next, Ulstein Verft will move Nexans Auroraย quaysideย for final outfitting and start-upย commissioning. The vessel features aย concentric, split-basket 10,000Te carouselย andย dual cable lay capabilities. In addition, the crew can select eitherย Capstanย orย Tensionerย firing lines. Together, these features and the robust design help the vessel continueย cable installation work even in severe weather conditions.

Flagship Role and First Project

Nexans states that Aurora will operate asย โ€œthe flagship in the Nexans fleet,โ€ย which underscores its importance in the companyโ€™s offshore strategy. The vesselโ€™sย first assignmentย will support theย Seagreen Offshore Wind Farmย off the coast of Scotland. Operations are scheduled to begin inย Q3 2021. Collaborative Design and Global Operations

Nexans developed the vessel with several specialist partners.ย Skipstekniskย led theย ship design, whileย Ulstein Verftย managedย engineering and outfitting.ย MAATS Techย supplied theย cable installation equipment. Theย CRIST shipyardย in Poland built the hull before sending it to Norway. As a result of this collaboration, Nexans Aurora can supportย subsea cable and umbilical installation worldwide, from shallow-water projects toย deepwater offshore activities.
