NKT announced that it now leads the power cable sector as the first major manufacturer to join a net-zero emissions initiative. Theย NKT net-zero emissions power cable manufacturerย roadmap builds on earlier climate goals and closely follows the Paris Agreement 1.5ยฐC ambition. As a result, sustainability sits at the core of its strategy.
NKT Commits to Science Based Targets Initiative
NKT already aims to reduce its own greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 5% every year. This goal aligns with efforts to keep global temperature rise within 1.5ยฐC above pre-industrial levels. Now, the company also joins theย Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)ย and plans to set a firm net-zero deadline as soon as possible, with 2050 as the latest date. In support of this, NKT continues to target average annual CO2 cuts of 5%. For more details, visitย NKT.
Leadership Statement from NKT CEO
NKT President & CEOย Alexander Karaย stated that he feels proud to see NKT become the first major power cable manufacturer to adopt this verified, science-based climate approach. He explained that the decision sends a clear signal to all stakeholders that NKT intends to accelerate its sustainability journey.
Furthermore, Kara noted that NKT has already shifted all power cable plants to electricity from renewable sources. This move reduces CO2 emissions from annual energy consumption by 66%. In practical terms, that equals more than 48,000 tons of CO2 compared to 2019 levels.
Decarbonization and Circularity Initiatives
Beyond its SBTi commitment, NKT also runs several decarbonization initiatives across its operations. For example, the company works to cut fuel consumption and develops projects that raise energy efficiency in power cable manufacturing. These steps help lower emissions while improving operational performance.
In addition, NKT focuses on circular solutions. It recycles materials such as XLPE and metals from power cable production. This activity reduces emissions from conventional waste management and, at the same time, supports a more sustainable cable value chain.
About the Science Based Targets Initiative
Theย Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)ย represents a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, and the World Wide Fund for Nature. Together, they provide a framework for climate targets grounded in science. Today, more than 1,000 companies worldwide have committed to setting science-based emissions reduction goals under this initiative.
