NKT reports that it will supply 150 km of land cable for the Viking Link project

NKT has secured a major contract for the Viking Link power cable project from Energinet and National Grid. This project will connect the Danish and British electricity transmission grids using advanced high-voltage power cables.

Viking Link Power Cable Project Scope and Production

The Viking Link owners awarded NKT a contract worth approximately €90 million. NKT will deliver around 150 km of 525 kV mass impregnated (MI) high-voltage DC onshore power cables.

NKT will manufacture the cables at its facility in Karlskrona, Sweden, with production scheduled to begin in 2020. The cable system will extend from Denmark’s western coast to the power grid substation in Revsing, southern Jutland.

Strategic Importance of Viking Link

NKT Interim CEO Roland Andersen emphasized the project’s role in Europe’s renewable energy transition. He stated that Viking Link strengthens cross-border energy infrastructure and highlights NKT’s expertise in extra high-voltage interconnector solutions.

The recognition from Energinet and National Grid reinforces NKT’s position in the growing interconnector market.

Supporting Renewable Energy Integration

Once completed, the 760 km Viking Link interconnector will enable efficient energy exchange between Denmark and the United Kingdom. It will help balance wind power generation with electricity demand across both countries.

Stronger grid integration will improve energy efficiency and support the transition to renewable energy sources. The project plays a key role in helping both nations meet their renewable energy targets.

The Viking Link interconnector is scheduled for commissioning in 2023.
