NKT to supply Amprion 600 km of power cable for 2 on-shore projects in Germany

NKT Wins โ‚ฌ2.2 Billion Power Cable Projects and Expands German Capacity

NKTย has secured two majorย power cable projects in Germanyย worth aboutย โ‚ฌ2.2 billion. The company also plans toย invest โ‚ฌ100 millionย to expand itsย high-voltage cable capacityย at itsย Cologne factory. This move strengthens NKTโ€™s role in supporting Germanyโ€™s renewable energy transition under theย Energiewende program.

Boosting Germanyโ€™s Power Grid Expansion

Amprion GmbH, a leading German transmission system operator, awarded NKT contracts for two large onshore power cable projects. The order includesย high-voltage AC and DC cablesย that will improve electricity transmission and grid reliability across the country.

The projects include:

  • Korridor-B V48:ย Aboutย 430 km of 525 kV HVDC cablesย designed to move renewable energy across long distances.

  • Rheinquerung:ย Nearlyย 70 km of AC cables, combiningย 20 km of 380 kVย andย 50 km of 110 kVย lines to expand the national power network.

Together, these projects will help power Germanyโ€™s clean energy transition and are scheduled for commissioning betweenย 2029 and 2031.

Supporting the Energy Transition

โ€œContracts like these drive forward the energy transition,โ€ saidย Dr. Hendrik Neumann, CTO at Amprion. โ€œWorking with trusted partners like NKT ensures we stay on schedule and reach our climate goals.โ€

Meanwhile, NKT continues to see strong project growth. These new contracts raise itsย high-voltage order backlogย to aroundย โ‚ฌ12 billion, building on the companyโ€™s positive momentum since 2023.

Expanding Local Production Capacity

To meet rising demand, NKT will invest in added high-voltage capacity at itsย Cologne plant. The investment will be rolled out gradually starting inย 2027, helping increase cable output and manufacturing efficiency.

Furthermore, this expansion supports NKTโ€™s ambition to achieve aย Return on Capital Employed (RoCE)ย aboveย 20%ย in the mid-term.

Advancing Sustainability and Local Jobs

Most cables for the projects will come from theย Cologne facility, which operates entirely onย renewable electricity. Producing nearby will reduce logistics time and emissions, cutting the overallย carbon footprint.

Additionally, the project will create and sustainย skilled jobsย in Germany, reinforcing NKTโ€™s commitment to sustainability, local production, and European clean energy leadership.
