NTT MIST submarine cable project overview
NTT Ltd. plans to build the NTT MIST submarine cable project, a high-capacity subsea system connecting Singapore, Myanmar, and India. This new route will boost regional connectivity and support fast-growing data traffic across South and Southeast Asia.
High-capacity MIST cable design and scale
The MIST cable system will extend about 11,000 km and link key landing points in all three countries. It also allows room for future expansion as demand rises.
The system will use 12 fiber pairs and deliver up to 240 Tbps of capacity. In practical terms, that bandwidth can move roughly six hours of HD video—about three movies—in just one second.
Overall project costs are estimated at around US$400 million. NTT intends to connect the MIST cable directly to its large-scale data centers in Singapore, Myanmar, and India. As a result, customers should see lower latency, higher speeds, and more resilient network paths.
Strategic joint venture with Orient Link
NTT will develop the MIST cable together with Orient Link Pte. Ltd., a strategic joint venture formed by NTT Ltd., JICT, and WEN Capital. This partnership fits into NTT’s broader plan to expand submarine cable infrastructure in Southeast Asia and handle surging international data demand.
In addition, Orient Link expects to secure extra funding from anchor customers, which may include major cloud and OTT players such as Google and leading regional operators.
Expanding NTT’s global connectivity portfolio
NTT already participates in several major subsea systems, including Asia Submarine Cable Express (ASE), Asia Pacific Gateway (APG), Pacific Crossing‑1 (PC‑1), and the JUPITER Cable. By adding the NTT MIST submarine cable project, the company will extend its reach deeper into India and further strengthen routes between Asia and the rest of the world.
Together with its submarine cables and global data center platform, NTT can now offer more integrated connectivity and infrastructure solutions to enterprises and service providers on multiple continents.
NTT Ltd. and Orient Link ownership structure
NTT Ltd. launched in London on July 1, 2019 as the global operating company of the NTT Group, combining 28 brands into one organization. Later, on October 10, 2019, NTT Ltd. created Orient Link to accelerate its submarine cable business and better serve Southeast Asia’s fast-growing digital needs.
Orient Link’s shareholders include NTT (42%), JICT (38%), and WEN Capital (20%), bringing together telecom expertise, infrastructure funding, and regional deployment experience in a single platform.
