OCC CommScope Patent Cross-License Deal Strengthens Connectivity Collaboration
Optical Cable Corporation (OCC) and CommScope signed a long-term agreement to cross‑license parts of their patent portfolios. The OCC CommScope Patent Cross-License Deal deepens their long-running partnership and supports faster innovation in structured cabling and in‑building wireless solutions.
Broader Access to Copper and Wireless Patents
Under this agreement, each company can use selected copper data communication connectivity patents from the other. In addition, OCC grants access to its in‑building wireless patents, which support next‑generation indoor wireless networks. Together, these rights give both parties more flexibility to design new enterprise and data center products.
Builds on Earlier Category 6/6A Cooperation
The new deal extends a 2004 cross‑license between CommScope and SMP Data Communications, which later became part of OCC. That earlier arrangement focused on copper connectivity core technologies for Category 6 and Category 6A RJ45 connector performance. Now, the updated agreement expands the scope and keeps that technical cooperation current.
Long-Term Relationship and Customer Benefits
CommScope’s vice president of building connectivity infrastructure, John Schmidt, highlighted the longstanding relationship with OCC and welcomed the chance to extend it. He emphasized that the cross‑license should help both companies maintain reliable, standards‑driven solutions and provide more choice and performance for their customers.
