Prysmian Group Advances Vineyard Wind 1 Submarine Cable Project
Prysmian Group, a global leader in energy and telecom cable systems, received a Notice to Proceed on a €200 million contract to supply and install a submarine power cable system for the Vineyard Wind 1 offshore wind farm. The Prysmian Vineyard Wind 1 submarine cable project covers 134 kilometers of high-voltage cable that will deliver renewable energy to the U.S. mainland.
Powering Homes and Expanding Offshore Wind
The Vineyard Wind 1 project marks a major milestone in the U.S. offshore wind industry. Once complete, it will include 62 turbines producing 800 megawatts (MW) of clean energy—enough to power more than 400,000 homes.
Awarded in 2019 by Vineyard Wind LLC, a joint venture between Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Avangrid Renewables (part of the Iberdrola Group), the project reinforces America’s commitment to renewable energy.

Designing and Installing Next-Generation Cable Systems
Under the contract, Prysmian Group will design, manufacture, install, and commission a 220 kV HVAC cable system. It will include two three-core cables insulated with XLPE technology for maximum durability.
Production will take place at the company’s advanced facilities in Pikkala, Finland, and Arco Felice, Italy. Furthermore, Prysmian’s cutting-edge cable-laying vessels, Cable Enterprise and Ulisse, will handle installation. The company plans to deliver and commission the system by Q4 2023.
Improving Cable Reliability with PRY-CAM Technology
To ensure long-term performance, Prysmian will integrate its PRY-CAM permanent monitoring system. This smart technology provides continuous data and accurate insights into cable health. As a result, it improves uptime, reduces risk, and cuts maintenance costs—helping operators maintain stable, reliable power flow.
