Prysmian gets โ€˜go-aheadโ€™ for cable contract for the 1st large offshore U.S. wind farm

Prysmian Group Advances Vineyard Wind 1 Submarine Cable Project

Prysmian Group, a global leader in energy and telecom cable systems, received aย Notice to Proceedย on aย โ‚ฌ200 million contractย to supply and install aย submarine power cable systemย for theย Vineyard Wind 1 offshore wind farm. Theย Prysmian Vineyard Wind 1 submarine cable projectย coversย 134 kilometersย of high-voltage cable that will deliver renewable energy to the U.S. mainland.

Powering Homes and Expanding Offshore Wind

Theย Vineyard Wind 1ย project marks a major milestone in the U.S. offshore wind industry. Once complete, it will includeย 62 turbinesย producingย 800 megawatts (MW)ย of clean energyโ€”enough to powerย more than 400,000 homes.

Awarded in 2019 byย Vineyard Wind LLC, a joint venture betweenย Copenhagen Infrastructure Partnersย andย Avangrid Renewablesย (part of theย Iberdrola Group), the project reinforces Americaโ€™s commitment to renewable energy.

Designing and Installing Next-Generation Cable Systems

Under the contract,ย Prysmian Groupย willย design, manufacture, install, and commissionย aย 220 kV HVAC cable system. It will include twoย three-core cablesย insulated withย XLPE technologyย for maximum durability.

Production will take place at the companyโ€™s advanced facilities inย Pikkala, Finland, andย Arco Felice, Italy. Furthermore, Prysmianโ€™s cutting-edgeย cable-laying vessels,ย Cable Enterpriseย andย Ulisse, will handle installation. The company plans to deliver and commission the system byย Q4 2023.

Improving Cable Reliability with PRY-CAM Technology

To ensure long-term performance, Prysmian will integrate itsย PRY-CAM permanent monitoring system. This smart technology provides continuous data and accurate insights into cable health. As a result, it improves uptime, reduces risk, and cuts maintenance costsโ€”helping operators maintain stable, reliable power flow.

Supporting the U.S. Energy Transition

โ€œThe Vineyard project highlights how fast the U.S. is moving toward renewable energy,โ€ saidย Hakan Ozmen, EVP Projects atย Prysmian Group. โ€œWeโ€™re proud to help upgrade power grid infrastructure and accelerate the nationโ€™s energy transition.โ€

With cutting-edge cable systems, strong global operations, and extensive experience in offshore projects,ย Prysmian Groupย continues to drive innovation in clean energy. Its work underscores a strong commitment to sustainability and a low-carbon future.
