Prysmian Tyrrhenian Link Project Wins โฌ1.71 Billion Terna Deal
Prysmian Group signed a framework contract worth about โฌ1.71 billion with Terna Rete Italia SpA (Terna) for the Prysmian Tyrrhenian Link project. The HVDC system links Sardinia, Sicily, and Campania. As a result, it strengthens power exchange between the regions and reinforces Italyโs Mediterranean energy hub.
The Prysmian Tyrrhenian Link project also covers design, supply, submarine and land installation, and commissioning of more than 1,500 km of submarine power cables.
Scope and Technical Design
Terna, Italyโs transmission system operator, chose Prysmian for a turnkey scope that includes one to three 500 kV HVDC links. Each link is about 500 km long. It uses singleโcore, massโimpregnated HVDC cables with double wire armoring. This newer Prysmian design improves strength and reliability in deep water.
In addition, the contract includes an electrode system, an optical fiber cable for monitoring, land civil works, and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) for landfalls.
Cable Production and DeepโWater Installation
Prysmian will manufacture both submarine and land cables at its Arco Felice plant near Naples. This factory serves as one of the Groupโs main highโvoltage production hubs.
For offshore work, Prysmian will use its cableโlaying vessel Leonardo da Vinci. The ship can install cable at depths up to 2,000 meters. Therefore, it sets a new record for power cable projects. Delivery and commissioning will roll out in stages from 2025 to 2028, so the system will gradually support the Italian grid.
How the Prysmian Tyrrhenian Link Project Backs Energy Transition
The new 1,000 MW submarine link helps Italy move toward its energy transition and climate targets. It increases power exchange capacity among Sardinia, Sicily, and Campania. Consequently, the regions can share more locally generated solar and wind power.
In turn, the Prysmian Tyrrhenian Link project improves the use of renewable energy flows, supports a more efficient electricity market, and enhances national grid stability.
Strategic Step for Prysmian Group
Prysmian CEO Valerio Battista describes the Tyrrhenian Link as a milestone infrastructure project. He notes that Prysmian combines deep engineering expertise, advanced cable technology, and strong marine assets to handle such a complex HVDC system.
EVP Project Business Hakan Ozmen adds that this award joins about โฌ2.3 billion in projects won in 2021. Together, these wins strengthen Prysmianโs ambition to act as a strategic partner for power grid development and to drive the global energy transition.
