Prysmian Group wins contract for Alaskan submarine fiber optic cable link project

Prysmian Group Alaskan Fiber Project Expands Rural Connectivity

Prysmian Group won a $20 million contract from Alaska Power & Telephone Company (AP&T) to supply, install, and test two submarine fiber optic cable links in southeast Alaska. The Prysmian Group Alaskan fiber project, called SEALink, will deliver high-speed broadband to communities that have never had reliable internet access.

This partnership marks another step forward in connecting Alaska’s remote regions to the global digital network.

Expanding Broadband Access in Southeast Alaska

The SEALink project, managed by AP&T Wireless (APTW), will connect Juneau with Prince of Wales Island through a 214-mile (343 km) subsea cable. Once completed, the network will bring high-speed internet to Kasaan and Coffman Cove, greatly improving communication and quality of life for residents.

In addition, the project supports the region’s economic growth by improving digital access for schools, businesses, and healthcare providers.

Advanced Submarine Cable Technology

Under the agreement, Prysmian will supply 323 kilometers of MINISUB brand cable containing 36 G.652.D optical fibers. The company will produce the cable at its Nordenham, Germany plant, one of Prysmian’s core submarine cable manufacturing centers.

Prysmian plans to deliver the system in the third quarter of 2022, with installation and testing completed by year-end. The company’s Projects Business Unit will manage operations to ensure quality and efficiency at every stage.

Strengthening Partnerships and Local Impact

“This project follows our successful Lynn Channel installation with AP&T in 2016,” said Hakan Ozmen, EVP of Prysmian Group’s Projects BU. “We are proud to support digital growth in Alaska and help close the connectivity gap in rural communities.”

Funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utility Service, the project demonstrates how government and industry partnerships can bridge the digital divide.

Building on Global Expertise in Submarine Systems

Ashutosh Bhargava, Global Business Director for Subsea Telecom at Prysmian Group, called the award an important achievement. “We are honored to work again with AP&T,” he said. “This project confirms our reputation as a trusted leader in submarine cable systems worldwide.”

Through the Prysmian Group Alaskan fiber project, the company continues to deliver sustainable, high-performance connectivity solutions across the globe.
