Prysmian partners with DEME Group for significant U.S. submarine cable contract

Prysmian and DEME Win Landmark CVOW BoP Deal

Prysmian Groupย has partnered withย DEME Groupย to secure a major U.S. submarine cable contract fromย Dominion Energy Virginiaย for theย Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW)ย project. This award marks a major step for the U.S. offshore wind sector and the first time a U.S. project uses a fullย Balance of Plant (BoP)ย contract structure.

Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind: Largest U.S. Project

The CVOW project will deliverย 2.6 GWย of offshore wind capacity usingย 176 turbines, each standing more thanย 800 feet tallย off the coast of Virginia. Prysmian will supply approximatelyย 880 kmย of submarine power cables under the BoP scope, while DEME will deliver the remaining infrastructure and installation works. Together, the partners will help build what is set to become the largest commercial offshore wind farm in the United States.

Technical Details of the Prysmian Dominion Energy Offshore Wind Cables

Under the BoP contract, the DEMEโ€“Prysmian consortium will handle transportation and installation of foundations and offshore substations, as well as fullย EPCI (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation)ย for the export and inter-array cables. Prysmianโ€™s share, worth aboutย โ‚ฌ630 million, covers cable supply and related installation activities within the overallย โ‚ฌ1.6 billionย contract value.

Prysmian will provide threeย 3-core 220 kV HVAC export cables, each aboutย 62 kmย long, totaling roughlyย 560 km, withย XLPE insulationย andย single-wire armoring. The company will also supplyย 320 kmย ofย 3-core 66 kV offshore inter-array cablesย using the same XLPE technology to connect turbines within the wind farm.โ€‹

Global Manufacturing Footprint for CVOW

Prysmian will manufacture the export cables at its plants inย Arco Felice, Italy, andย Pikkala, Finland, which serve as major hubs for high-voltage submarine cables. The inter-array cables will come from its facility inย Nordenham, Germany, another center of excellence in Prysmianโ€™s global network. The partners expect to complete the CVOW project byย 2026, supporting Dominion Energyโ€™s clean energy and infrastructure strategy.

Strategic Milestone for Prysmian and DEME

โ€œFollowing the Vineyard offshore project and the SOO Green HVDC link, this Dominion Energy award further confirms our leading role in helping customers achieve their energy transition goals,โ€ said Prysmian Group CEOย Valerio Battista. He emphasized that the U.S. remains a key growth market, especially as federal infrastructure and clean energy commitments accelerate new offshore wind investments.

EVP Projectsย Hakan Ozmenย noted that Dominion selected the Prysmianโ€“DEME consortium for its unique mix of financial strength, technical experience, fleet resources, and cable supply capabilities, which reduce interface risk on such a large-scale project. For both Prysmian and DEME, the CVOW BoP contract reinforces their leadership in the global offshore wind supply chain and positions them at the center of the U.S. offshore wind buildโ€‘out.
