Prysmian wins major U.S. cable contract

Prysmian SOO Green HVDC Cable Deal Connects Major U.S. Power Markets

Prysmian Groupย secured a turn-key contract worth aboutย โ‚ฌ900 millionย to supply roughlyย 700 miles of ยฑ525 kV XLPE HVDC cableย for theย SOO Green HVDC Linkย project. Thisย Prysmian SOO Green HVDC Cable Dealย will connect two of the largest U.S. energy markets through a new underground transmission corridor.

Prysmian SOO Green HVDC Cable Deal Backs First-of-Its-Kind Link

SOO Green HVDC Link, LLC selected Prysmian as its preferred high-voltage DC cable supplier for this first-of-its-kind project. Theย 2,100 MWย interregional link will run underground along existing railroad rights-of-way, which reduces visual impact and simplifies permitting.

The SOO Green line will connect theย MISO (Midcontinent Independent System Operator)ย region in the central U.S. with theย PJM Interconnectionย in the East. Together, these markets will deliver enough clean power to serve more thanย 1.2 million homes. For more details, seeย www.soogreenrr.com.

Ownership, Development, and Construction Partners

Investment funds managed byย Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners,ย Siemens Energy, andย Jingoli Powerย own SOO Green. Meanwhile,ย Direct Connect Development Company, LLC, based in Minneapolis, leads project development and coordination.

The award to Prysmian still depends on final contract approvals. However,ย Jingoli Powerย will perform the construction scope, which will be added to the projectโ€™s overall contract value once finalized.

Route, Converter Stations, and Cable Manufacturing

The underground HVDC cables will primarily follow railroad corridors betweenย northern Iowaย andย northern Illinois, just west ofย Chicago. They will link SOO Greenโ€™s converter station in Iowa to a matching converter station in Illinois, enabling efficient long-distance power transfers between regions.

Prysmian expects cable production to begin inย 2023. The company will manufacture the cable at itsย Abbeville, South Carolinaย facility, which it is upgrading to support large-scale U.S. transmission projects.

Supporting the U.S. Zero-Carbon Grid Goal

This project supportsย President Bidenโ€™s goal of a zero-carbon power grid by 2035ย because it helps move low-carbon and renewable energy from high-resource areas to major demand centers.

Prysmian Group CEOย Valerio Battistaย noted that, after flagship wins such as theย Vineyard offshore wind farmย contract and theย Washington, D.C. transmission upgrade, this opportunity further strengthens Prysmianโ€™s role as a partner of choice in the U.S. interconnector market.
