TFKable qualifies 320-kV HVDC land cable system to IEC 62895

Poland’s Tele-Fonika Kable completed IEC 62895 type qualification for a 320-kV extruded HVDC land cable system, positioning it for underground links, interconnectors and wind transmission projects; PQT may still be required.

Poland’s Tele-Fonika Kable (TFKable) reported that it has completed type qualification of a 320-kV high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) cable system to IEC 62895, a milestone that broadens the company’s ability to pursue extruded-insulation HVDC land-cable opportunities.

IEC 62895 covers HVDC land cables and accessories with extruded insulation for rated voltages up to 320 kV. TFKable said the type test confirms a specified cable-and-accessories design can meet the standard’s electrical, mechanical and other performance requirements, including voltage load-cycle and impulse testing.

The qualification provides a technical basis for TFKable to pursue projects such as underground HVDC transmission links, converter-station connections, cross-border interconnectors and the land-cable portions of offshore wind transmission developments.

The achievement does not necessarily enable the company to bid for all such projects, as a second, long-duration prequalification test (PQT) is often required for major HVDC links. CIGRE Technical Brochure 852, Recommendations for Testing DC Extruded Cable Systems for Power Transmission at a Rated Voltage up to and including 800 kV, recommends both type testing and PQT as part of a full qualification program for new extruded HVDC cable systems.

TFKable operates multiple manufacturing sites. Its group website lists three Polish plants, one Serbian plant and two U.K. plants, as well as global commercial operations.
