Theย U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA)ย has awarded aย feasibility study grantย toย Malaysiaโs Hexa Capital Consultancyย to advance theย Malaysia-U.S. submarine cable project, officially known as the Malaysia-U.S. (MYUS) Submarine Fiber Optic Cable System. This milestone initiative will become the first subsea cable directly linking Malaysia and the United States, enhancing digital connectivity and economic collaboration across the Pacific.
Malaysia currently connects to 18 international subsea cable systems. However, only theย Asia-America Gateway (AAG)ย currently links the country directly with the United States. The upcomingย MYUS Cableย will transform that landscape, providing a new, secure, and high-capacity route across the Pacific.
The MYUS network spans approximatelyย 19,220 kilometers, featuringย six landing stations in Southeast Asiaโincludingย Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippinesโandย three landing stationsย acrossย U.S. states and territories in the Pacific. While engineers have yet to release full capacity details, the project demonstrates a major leap toward stronger regional connectivity.
According toย USTDA Director Enoh T. Ebong, the MYUS system will strengthen the regionโs digital future by increasing affordable and reliable connectivity. โThis project enhances access to secure and cost-effective digital services across Southeast Asia, including remote and underserved communities, while reinforcing a trusted communications link with the United States,โ Ebong said.
