The Wire Association International (WAI) Board of Directors continued its strategic planning efforts at Interwire 2025. The board built on discussions that began at Wire Expo, with guidance from consultant Eric Curtis of Curtis Strategy.

WAI Centennial Plan Focus Areas
The WAI Centennial Plan centers on four key pillars that drive future growth:
- Education and Training Center
- Trade shows and conferences
- WJI and WAI media platforms
- Member users and customers
In addition, the board emphasized several core beliefs. Members agreed that wire drawing and extrusion require specialized expertise that other associations do not provide. They also highlighted the growing importance of technology, digital platforms, and AI, while reinforcing the continued value of in-person events for hybrid work environments.
Industry Priorities and Key Challenges
During the meeting, board members divided into smaller groups to identify priority areas and industry challenges. These discussions revealed a shared goal: position WAI as the leading source for technical knowledge in the wire and cable industry.
At the same time, members raised concerns about the loss of experienced professionals as industry veterans retire. Workforce development and knowledge transfer remain critical issues.
WAI President Eric Bieberich emphasized the importance of action. He noted that the association’s volunteers and staff can develop programs that help attract and retain skilled employees across the industry.
Expanding Education and Training Initiatives
WAI has already increased its focus on education and training. The association offers video-based courses designed to support workforce development.
Under the leadership of WAI Manager of Education John Markowski, the organization has launched four courses covering:
- Single-layer extrusion
- Extrusion materials
- Extrusion applications
- Introduction to ferrous metallurgy
Looking ahead, WAI plans to release additional courses on extrusion process considerations, wire drawing dies, lubricants, and wire break prevention.
