Alcatel Submarine to partner with Prima for 1st SMART Subsea cable system

Prima and Alcatel Submarine Networks Launch SMART Subsea Cable Initiative

Prima, a leading telecom and data infrastructure provider, has partnered withย Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN)ย to pioneer the worldโ€™s firstย “smart” subsea cable system. Theย Prima and Alcatel Submarine Networks SMART Cable Initiativeย will revolutionize ocean monitoring by integrating environmental sensors into transoceanic telecommunication cables.

Transforming Ocean Observation with SMART Subsea Cables

This first-of-its-kind system will equip subsea cables with sensors that measureย temperature, pressure, and seismic activity. These readings will allow scientists to monitor changes in the Earthโ€™s oceans and detect early signs ofย climate shifts and seismic events.

By combining research and communication technology, the SMART cable system will not only enhance global data transmission but also deliver continuous insights into the planetโ€™s health.

Expanding Pacific Connectivity and Ocean Observation

Under the new contract, theย Prima and Alcatel Submarine Networks SMART Cableย will connectย Vanuatuย andย New Caledonia, extending further toย Australiaย andย Fiji. Beyond telecommunications, the system will also contribute toย earthquake detectionย andย climate research, enhancing disaster preparedness in the Pacific region.

The SMART subsea cable will complement regional networks by improving bothย data transmission performanceย andย ocean monitoring capability.

Building on Primaโ€™s Experience in Pacific Connectivity

Primaย continues to operate and maintain theย ICN1 subsea cable system, which linksย Vanuatuย withย Suva, Fiji. Since launching inย 2014, ICN1 has provided crucial connectivity to the Pacific Islands.

Owned entirely by the people ofย Vanuatu, this network reflects the nationโ€™s leadership in community-driven digital infrastructure. The upcoming SMART cable complements ICN1โ€™s success, bringing science and communication together for a greater regional impact.

Advancing Sustainability and Digital Innovation

Through this collaboration,ย Primaย andย ASNย aim to create a model for futureย sustainable telecom infrastructure, blending communications technology with environmental responsibility.

This innovative approach placesย the Pacific Islands at the forefrontย of both marine science and next-generation digital infrastructure, setting a precedent for how connectivity and sustainability can thrive together.
