Unidata ASN Unitirreno Subsea Cable Project Begins
Italian carrierย Unidataย has partnered withย Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN)ย to build theย Unidata ASN Unitirreno subsea cable, a new system that linksย Sicilyย withย Romeย andย Genoaย on the Italian mainland. The route connectsย Mazara del Valloย on Sicilyโs western tip to Genoa and includes a junction point near Rome.

Unidata ASN Unitirreno Subsea Cable Delivers Open Capacity
Theย Unidata ASN Unitirreno subsea cableย will be theย first 24โfiberโpair open cable system in the Mediterranean. This design gives carriers, cloud providers, and content platforms flexible access and strong upgrade potential. In addition, aย 16โfiberโpair branchย will land nearย Fiumicino, close to Rome, where Unidata is building aย green data center hub.
The system will supportย 20 Tb/s per fiber pair, reaching a total design capacity of up toย 480 Tb/s. As a result, it will help operators scale bandwidth quickly while keeping longโterm capacity costs under control.
LowโLatency Path and Future Growth
Overall, Unitirreno will span aboutย 890 km. The route creates theย shortest, quickest path from Sicily to Northern Europe via Genoa and Milan, with an expected latency of aroundย 9 milliseconds. In practice, this latency is aboutย half or lessย than many domestic terrestrial backbone alternatives, which benefits financial trading, cloud services, and other realโtime applications.
The design also includesย stubbed branching unitsย to enable future landings inย Sardiniaย and/orย Palermo. This approach lets Unidata extend the system later as demand grows along key Mediterranean corridors.
ASN Technology Powers Unitirreno
โASN will design, manufacture, and deliver the Unitirreno system with the stateโofโtheโart technology that has made ASN a leader in the telecommunications submarine industry,โ saidย Paul Gabla, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at ASN. Together, Unidata and ASN expect Unitirreno to strengthen Italyโs role as a strategic connectivity hub between the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
