Bekaert and Edison Next Launch 12-Year Solar Power Partnership in Sardinia
Bekaertย andย Edison Nextย have signed a 12-year solar power purchase agreement (PPA) to install a new renewable energy system at Bekaertโs Sardinia plant in Cagliari, Italy. This partnership marks another key milestone in Bekaertโs global sustainability program,ย Creating a Better Tomorrow.
Expanding Clean Energy Through the Bekaert Sardinia Solar Power Project
Through this agreement, Edison Next will finance, build, and manage a 6.1 MW photovoltaic system across 23,000 square meters. When operational in 2025, the system will produce more than 11.2 GWh of clean electricity each year. This output will supply over 20% of the plantโs energy needs.
In addition, Bekaert will consume around 93% of the renewable energy generated. This shift will cut approximately 3,000 metric tons of COโ emissions annually. It also strengthens the companyโs energy independence and helps reduce its overall carbon footprint.
Innovation Driving Sustainability
The Sardinia solar project features advanced trackers that follow the sunโs path, ensuring maximum energy efficiency throughout the day. Michael Hamilton, VP of Procurement Commodities at Bekaert, said the project continues the companyโs progress after the success of its solar plant in Burgos, Spain.
This new installation, he added, helps Bekaert advance its goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 46.2% by 2030. Moreover, it protects the company from increasing energy prices while accelerating the transition to clean energy.
